Two Queensland state-owned energy organisations are offering apprenticeships to meet workforce needs in the sector.

Ergon Energy has launched its 2012 apprentice recruitment drive, with 75 positions on offer in more than 30 locations throughout the state.

Each year Ergon offers apprenticeships in a range of trades, based on the needs of the workforce. Apprenticeships available next year include communications technician, distribution linesperson, transmission linesperson, systems electrician, mechanical fitter and boiler maker.  Five positions available in 2012 have been identified for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.

ENERGEX has also recently introduced a new apprenticeship program aimed to encourage Australians of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds to take up apprenticeships in the electricity distribution industry.

The initiative— known as the Power Mob program—is believed to be the first of its kind in the industry.

The 18-week training program is run in association with the Metropolitan South Institute of TAFE, with backing from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation's Indigenous Initiatives Division, the Queensland Council of Unions, the Electrical Trades Union and ENERGEX's Resource Development team.
