Plans have been unveiled for the “world’s biggest battery”, to be built in NSW.

CEP Energy says its $2.4 billion battery at Kurri Kurri, in the Hunter Valley north-west of Newcastle, will have capacity of up to 1,200 megawatts.

That would make it about eight times greater than the battery at Hornsdale in South Australia, which was the biggest when it began operating in 2017.

“The (Hunter Economic Zone) site for our NSW battery is zoned for heavy industrial use, pre-approved for power generation and located adjacent to sub-station infrastructure. It is among the best handful of sites in Australia for reliable and efficient grid connection,” CEP chief Peter Wright said in a statement.

The planned battery could threaten the Morrison government’s plan to build a gas-fired generator in the Hunter Valley area.
