As the Major Project Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager for the Borumba and Gladstone Reinforcement projects, you will use your technical knowledge to promote excellent safety outcomes by providing expert advice, support, and assistance to team members, stakeholders, and the projects. This role offers significant autonomy, allowing you to manage your responsibilities independently while focusing on transformative projects for Queensland's infrastructure. You will be part of a dedicated team, ensuring that no two days are ever the same. The role involves coordinating, implementing, monitoring, and governing HSE programs, systems, and processes within the Project Delivery Team, driving consistency with project and corporate Powerlink expectations. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact on Queensland's future infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer technical safety management advice and practical risk control solutions. Coach front-line leaders, mentor Safety Advisors, and support training on safety management.
  • Ensure safety aspects of HSE systems meet policy, legislative, and project requirements. Monitor external changes to maintain compliance with social and regulatory standards.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders, communicate system changes, and resolve competing priorities with project partners to ensure compliance.
  • Review HSE performance, provide insights for improvement, and lead health and safety audits. Develop cost-effective recommendations to address audit findings and respond to safety issues.
  • Lead or participate in investigations for effective outcomes, oversee emergency response planning, and ensure preparedness.
  • Create and implement affordable well-being programs for remote staff, camp residents, and mental health support aligned with project goals.

The community you will join

As the Major Project Health, Safety and Wellbeing Manager, your role is crucial to the overall success of the Borumba and Gladstone Reinforcement projects. You will ensure that safety standards are upheld, which is vital for the smooth and efficient progress of these large-scale infrastructure projects. By providing expert advice, support, and assistance to team members and stakeholders, you will help mitigate risks and prevent accidents, thereby maintaining a safe working environment.

Additionally, you will work closely with the Project Directors and other key team members, fostering a culture of safety and wellbeing throughout the project lifecycle. This collaboration is essential for addressing any safety concerns promptly and effectively, ensuring that the projects stay on track and meet their objectives.

This role can be located in Brisbane (Bowen Hills) or Gladstone and will report to the Manager of Safety. In the future, the role may have up to three direct reports. Overall, you will play a pivotal role in promoting a safe and healthy work environment, which is fundamental to the successful completion of the Borumba and Gladstone Reinforcement projects.

Your expertise

  • Degree level qualifications in Workplace Health & Safety or another related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Formal investigation qualification or experience in contemporary event learning approaches
  • Formal internal audit qualifications (e.g., ISO45001/IS014001/ISO9001) and experience in delivering formal HSE audits.

We’d also love you to have:

  • Extensive experience in managing and delivering safety monitoring and compliance activities for large-scale, complex infrastructure construction projects. Extensive knowledge of, and ability to advise on, strategies to appropriately manage safety issues which arise during planning, design and construction phases of infrastructure projects and maintenance of linear infrastructure.
  • Demonstrable experience in designing, developing, adapting and delivering safety management processes, systems, strategies and initiatives.
  • Extensive experience in providing safety mentoring, and proven track record of being able to effectively coach business managers and team members to improve understanding and create a shift in understanding and skills that benefits the individual and the business.
  • Extensive experience working in an environment with a diverse workforce and multiple stakeholders, including unions and Government, with a demonstrated ability to deal with complex safety issues and regulatory requirements on large-scale construction activities and maintenance of linear infrastructure, applying a risk management methodology. Proven track record in working cooperatively and collaboratively with specialists and others who support the delivery of HSE solutions to achieve positive business results and HSE outcomes.
  • Extensive knowledge of safety legislation and ability to review and interpret policies, procedures and statutory requirements and apply these to the construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructure, including conducting audits and assurance activities to identify improvement opportunities and develop cost-effective recommendations and solutions.
