Electrical and Electronics Engineer - Experimental Scientist – Standards for Low Frequency Electrical Quantities

About the National Measurement Institute
We are the Australian Government’s national authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally and we work to enhance and maintain these standards.

We value the different skills, knowledge and perspectives our employees bring. We’re committed to giving everyone an equal opportunity to participate, contribute and progress. Our values and behaviours centre on being, adaptable, innovative, accountable, strategic, inclusive and influential.

About the team
The Physical Metrology Branch leads the development, maintenance and dissemination of Australia’s peak physical measurement standards. We provide the traceability assurance that measurements made in Australia are accepted internationally. The branch is an active participant in international measurement forums. Through the delivery of a range of calibrations and other measurement services branch staff share their expertise with Australian and international stakeholders. This includes to support research, process improvements, product optimisation and better measurement practice across the economic landscape.

The National Measurement Institute's Low Frequency Standards team is responsible for Australia’s primary standards for voltage, current, electrical power and energy, supporting reliable measurements across Australia in areas such as electricity networks, manufacturing, defence, and aviation. The team develops and maintains measurement systems for electrical standards (including quantum standards), and provides associated measurement services.

Our ideal candidate
You are an engineer/scientist keen to join the team and contribute to the development of new technologies and services to meet emerging customer requirements, and to provide electrical measurements services to industry.

You are an electrical or electronics engineer or experimental physicist looking for an opportunity to develop professionally while applying your diverse skillset to practical measurement challenges in a service delivery environment. You are adaptable, flexible, and ready to learn, with the aim to become a recognised national and international expert in electrical metrology.

You will lead by example, demonstrate behaviours consistent with the values of being inclusive, strategic, influential, adaptable, accountable and innovative and support others to do the same.

As the successful candidate, you will have:

  • the ability to make precise measurements using a range of measuring instruments and techniques
  • the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to evaluate measurement results, and to identify and resolve problems in complex measurement systems using electrical, electronic and mechanical skills
  • strong software development skills (preferably using LabVIEW, Python or VBA), deep knowledge of electrical circuit theory and data analysis (statistics) with good knowledge of general physics
  • well-developed communication skills to engage with clients, and with industry and the research community.

Familiarity with top-level digital instruments such as Precision Calibrators and Precision Digital Multimeters is desirable but not essential.

What you will do
As the successful candidate, you will have responsibility for electrical measurement services, and you will:

  • develop, enhance and maintain measurement standards and services
  • provide customer calibration services in electrical measurements, completing calibrations efficiently, accurately and to clients’ requirements
  • build and maintain constructive relationships with clients and external stakeholders, providing advice on technical issues and contributing to training programs
  • contribute to the ongoing improvement and maintenance of the group’s quality system documentation and processes
  • contribute to the group’s research and/or development programs such as quantum standards for electric voltage, developing your own research strengths within these programs
  • establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships within the Low Frequency Standards team. Leverage these relationships to provide high-level scientific and technical support, contribute to research directions, project planning and resource management.
