Research Scientist – Low-Frequency Electrical Standards

About the National Measurement Institute
We are the Australian Government’s national authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally and we work to enhance and maintain these standards.

We value the different skills, knowledge and perspectives our employees bring. We’re committed to giving everyone an equal opportunity to participate, contribute and progress. Our values and behaviours centre on being, adaptable, innovative, accountable, strategic, inclusive and influential.

About the team
The Physical Metrology Branch leads the development, maintenance and dissemination of Australia’s peak physical measurement standards. We provide the traceability assurance that measurements made in Australia are accepted internationally. The branch is an active participant in international measurement forums. Through the delivery of a range of calibrations and other measurement services branch staff share their expertise with Australian and international stakeholders. This includes to support research, process improvements, product optimisation and better measurement practice across the economic landscape.

The Electricity Section undertakes advanced research and development that anticipates new measurement technologies and applications, collaborating both nationally and internationally in support of its objectives. The Low-Frequency Standards Group within the Electricity Section develops, maintains and disseminates to industry Australia’s primary standards of electrical and magnetic quantities such as voltage, current, power and magnetic field. We provide calibration services with the lowest attainable levels of uncertainty and are presently developing new capabilities to cover emerging areas such as power quality and metrology for complex electrical waveforms.

Our ideal candidate
You are an experienced electrical engineer or scientist, eager to learn and to contribute to leading-edge electrical measurement research, and its dissemination to industry. You aspire to become an Australian and international authority in one or more areas of electrical measurement such as electrical energy, power quality and ac-dc transfer. You will have demonstrated leadership, stakeholder liaison and presentation skills, coupled with a sound ability to work as part of a team of senior engineers/scientists.

You have:

  • A tertiary qualification in electrical engineering or related discipline, preferably at a Ph.D level.
  • High levels of initiative, ingenuity and skill in designing, developing and applying electrical and electronic hardware and systems, preferably with the focus for precision electrical measurement.
  • Experience with complex software and firmware development, particularly for control applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with external clients and other stakeholders to determine requirements, provide high-level technical advice and deliver solutions.
  • Ability to stay positive, engaged and productive under pressure or after a setback, and support others to do the same. Maintain composure and embrace challenges.
  • You will lead by example, demonstrate behaviours consistent with the NMI Values.

What you will do

  • Provide high-level scientific and technical support for the operations of the Low Frequency Group, including contributing to research directions and project planning.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with clients and external stakeholders, both nationally and internationally, communicating research and services, providing advice on technical issues and developing fit for purpose measurement plans.
  • Develop, maintain and enhance measurement standards and services for various areas of electrical metrology (e.g. ac-dc transfer, electrical energy, power quality, metrology for complex electrical waveforms). Including associated test methods and software, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, reliability and integrity.
  • Develop, maintain and document validation processes for key calibration services and oversee their implementation, including training and development of other staff as required.
  • Undertake calibration and other measurement work across a range of areas within electrical metrology.
  • Create a high-performance work environment by developing talent, rewarding achievement, setting clear expectations and managing concerns in a timely manner.
