About the team
The Commercial Buildings Policy Team advances the energy efficiency of non-residential buildings through managing and updating existing regulations and developing new Government initiatives. The team undertakes policy analysis and development, prepares briefs and reports, and manages research projects. Important current areas of work include:

Carrying out key measures under the Trajectory for Low Energy Buildings.

Managing, reviewing, and developing the Commercial Building Disclosure (CBD) program. This program mandates the disclosure of energy efficiency ratings.

Implementing commercial buildings measures from the Climate Solutions Package and the measure Improving the Energy and Emissions Performance of Buildings.

Developing and implementing new energy efficiency measures. This assists to reduce costs and emissions for business.

Supporting the development and expansion of the National Australian Built Environment Ratings System (NABERS). We also assist in the development of the National Construction Code.

  • Have communications or secretariat experience. This is highly desirable as we administer large industry consultation processes.
  • Are flexible and reliable. They will be able to communicate well in a team and enable a harmonious working environment.

Relevant experience and qualifications would be an advantage. This could take the form of relevant experience in:

  • government policy analysis and program development, or
  • building energy efficiency, such as building ratings or assessments.

Qualifications in the following disciplines would be an advantage:

  • engineering, 
  • law,
  • science,
  • economics,
  • architecture,
  • urban planning or
  • environmental studies.

What you will do
We are looking to fill APS Level 5 and APS Level 6 Policy Officer roles within the team. We offer exciting and fulfilling work that makes a difference to the Department and Australia’s energy efficiency.

This team provides the opportunity to engage with a range of stakeholders on commercial buildings energy efficiency policy issues.

Duties may include:

  • Managing projects, including:
    • conducting procurement processes,
    • managing contracts, and
    • engaging with stakeholders, other relevant government agencies and across the Department.
  • Providing secretariat support for large consultation processes involving a wide range of industry stakeholders.
  • Providing timely and quality advice and responses to Departmental and Ministerial requests and correspondence.
  • Coordinating briefing input across the Department and other stakeholders.
  • Researching and obtaining technical advice to inform the development of briefing or management of projects.
