Swinburne University of Technology has received funding through the Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund to build the Victorian Hydrogen Hub (VH2) to drive hydrogen advancement in partnership with CSIRO and ARENA2036 in Germany. Jointly funded by CSIRO and Swinburne University of Technology, we have 8 Impact PhD scholarships available for students to undertake PhDs as part of this Australian-first international hydrogen development partnership.

The Impact PhD model has students forming a multidisciplinary cohort and undertaking their research studies working closely with partners. Students will have individual projects, but the group will collaborate to share knowledge, experience and contribute to solutions. A tailored training program focused on collaboration, innovation and research translation has been developed for this cohort.

Project topics

Successful applicants will work on projects in the following themes:

  • Community engagement and/ or public/ industry and consumer attitudes to hydrogen use
  • The social, environmental, economic, regulatory and safety impacts of hydrogen use
  • Sensors and technologies related to the implementation of hydrogen production, storage and use
  • Manufacturing and related supply chains supporting the development of a hydrogen industry within Victoria
  • Digital energy systems integration
  • Techno-economics of energy systems and new technology
  • Development of new hydrogen products and services
  • Skills and education to support the development of a hydrogen industry

Scholarship: $35,000 per annum
Tenure: 3 years
Location: These scholarships will be located at the Hawthorn campus, but each student will be required to undertake research at the Victorian Hydrogen Hub in Clayton, industry partner locations and any of the University's campuses. There may also be opportunities to work with ARENA2036 and other international partners. Thus, the incumbent must be willing to travel between campuses and work at a range of locations.

Eligibility and Assessment criteria

The successful applicants will have an Honours or Masters degree or a combination of study and research experience. Research experience in the workplace will be viewed favourably. We are seeking people who wish to work at the interface between technology, society, businesses and applications and have the aptitude to undertake solution focused research as part of a broader team.
