About the role

Reporting to the Planning Manager – Future Energy Systems the Planning Engineer will undertake system planning activities and develop long term generation & network (transmission and distribution) plans through an Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) methodology for Horizon Power’s systems that will lead to a cleaner energy future for our customers and the environment.

The key aspects of the role are:

• Develop Future Energy System plans for Horizon Power’s energy systems through an Integrated Resource Planning methodology.
• Develop generation and T&D network long term plans and solutions in each system, identifying opportunities for centralised & distributed renewables, energy storage, customer DER and other initiatives enabling the transition to a low carbon future.
• Undertake system studies to understand capacity, reliability and power quality constraints, particularly with increasing integration of renewables, energy storage and new technology / innovations.
• Conduct high level financial analysis of feasible options including techno economic risk based generation modelling.
• Provide input to business cases and support project development.
• Develop trusted and valued relationships with the Regions, and internal and external stakeholders to achieve robust long term planning outcomes.

In addition to sharing our passion, to be successful in this role you will have:

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering;
• Eligibility for corporate membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia;
• Knowledge of energy systems and assets (generation, transmission and distribution);
• Minimum 3 years relevant industry experience covering:
  • Energy systems (generation, transmission and distribution) planning, design and operation;
  • Generation dispatch modelling experience is highly desirable, particularly using HOMER Pro, MATLAB dispatch tools etc.;
  • Power system load flow analysis using DigSILENT PowerFactory or equivalent software packages (dynamic modelling experience is desirable);
  • Renewable energy and energy storage technologies;
  • Experience working within a regulatory environment is desirable;
• Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
