About the role

Reporting to the Planning Manager – Future Energy Systems the Senior Planning Engineer will lead and develop long term generation & network (transmission and distribution) plans through an Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) methodology for Horizon Power’s systems that will lead to a cleaner energy future for our customers and the environment.

The key aspects of the role are:

  • Develop Future Energy System plans and strategies for Horizon Power’s energy systems through an Integrated Resource Planning methodology.
  • Lead the development of generation and T&D network long term plans and solutions in each system, identifying opportunities for centralised & distributed renewables, energy storage, customer DER and other initiatives enabling the transition to a low carbon future.
  • Lead and undertake system studies to understand capacity, reliability and power quality constraints, particularly with increasing integration of renewables, energy storage and new technology / innovations.
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of modelling, processes and guidelines within the Future Energy Systems team.
  • Provide leading technical direction to the business on generation and network planning aspects.
  • Conduct financial analysis of feasible options including techno economic risk based generation modelling.
  • Provide input to business cases and submissions to management and the Board for project approval.
  • Develop trusted and valued relationships with the Regions, and internal and external stakeholders to achieve robust long term planning outcomes.
  • Work across the organisation to deliver an optimised capital plan and long term planning vision for each system aligned to the Regional Asset Management Plans, Generation and Corporate strategies. 
  • Provide technical support within the Future Energy Systems team and support the development of junior and graduate engineers.

In addition to sharing our passion, to be successful in this role you will have:

  • Relevant Engineering Degree Qualification;
  • Eligibility for corporate membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia;
  • Strong knowledge of generation, transmission and distribution systems and assets;
  • Sound knowledge of energy systems planning principles and financial evaluation techniques;
  • Minimum 7 years relevant industry experience covering:
    • Energy systems (generation, transmission and distribution) planning, design, operation and maintenance;
    • Generation dispatch modelling (experience with HOMER, MATLAB dispatch tools etc. is highly desirable);
    • Power system analysis using DigSILENT PowerFactory or equivalent software packages, particularly for dynamic modelling (highly desirable);
    • Renewable energy and energy storage technologies;
    • Project management techniques;
    • Experience working within a regulatory environment is desirable;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
