The Tasmanian Government has welcomed the roll out of smart grid technology, with Deputy Premier Bryan Green saying it will help deliver downward pressure on electricity prices.

"Everything the Government is doing to reform our energy sector is about keeping downward pressure on power prices and making sure we have reliable electricity supplies," Mr Green said.

"Smart grid technology is a key part of the Government's strategy to maximise the benefits of these reforms for customers.”

Mr Green said the Government had released an information paper to highlight some of the work already done to develop smart networks in Tasmania as well as the opportunities it creates.

"We want to learn from the experiences in other states in areas, particularly with respect to the introduction of smart meters, so that customers get the maximum benefit from new technology.

"Tasmanian electricity customers are at the centre of our thinking when it comes to progressing smart network technology in the State.”
