WA’s Carnarvon Shire is setting up two new battery storage systems that it hopes will boost the area's renewable energy use and help the local economy.

Shire president Karl Brandenburg says solar energy has been hugely popular in the region.

Local provider Horizon Power has even had to place a moratorium on the use of solar because of a lack of adequate storage.

So Carnarvon is installing the two new units to store the oversupply of energy produced by people’s rooftop solar panels.

“That technology is really going to enhance the whole of Australia if it works, so yes if it all leads to a cheaper energy supply it'll hopefully enhance the town and we'll hopefully get some growth in it, so yes a really good outcome for Carnarvon,” Mr Brandenberg said.

“The batteries will allow that flexibility to allow those systems to be put in place and more people will be able to use solar voltaic systems on their roofs and hopefully keep the cost of energy down,” he said.
